Trail Vegetation Committee

The role of the Trail Vegetation Committee is to coordinate activities that relate to:
  • Identification of existing plants on the RR Trail (Reference brochure on Planting in Harmony with Our Oak Woodland Oasis
  • Removal and mitigation of undesirable plants, both within the park and along the residential edges of the trail
  • Restoration of sections of the trail to more native plantings

The Committee plans activities for the monthly work parties, reflecting both the optimal season for weeding and planting, and fire prevention efforts of Oakland’s Wildfire Prevention Assessment District (WPAD). Since the trail is located in the greater Sausal Creek Watershed, vegetation planning is coordinated with plans developed by groups reflecting those interests (e.g., Friends of Sausal Creek).

Current top priorities for the Trail Vegetation Committee:
  • Develop and implement a plan for native plants in one meadow (completed)
  • Coordinate with Shepherd Canyon Homeowners Association and Fire Department to implement the Annual Vegetation Management Plan for the WPAD in the upper Shepherd Canyon watershed.

Other priorities and roles of the Trail Vegetation Committee:
  • Learn about native plants & trees in the Shepherd Canyon watershed
  • Train in plant identification, native plant restoration methodology and weeding techniques
  • Volunteer at the Joaquin Miller Native Plant Nursery to earn free plants for the Trail
  • Participate in monthly workdays as on-site experts
  • Develop and implement plant restoration plans using natives on the trail
  • Work individually or in small groups on selected restoration projects
  • Participate in fire-safety vegetation management on the trail
  • Help educate the community and trail users about what NOT to plant

Volunteers are solicited for the following tasks:
  • Work at the Joaquin Miller Native Plant Nursery
  • Join a team of trained “broom pullers” to work independently between work party events to eliminate invasive plants
  • Serve as Work Day Coordinator(s) to oversee the tasks associated with monthly work parties
  • Create brochure for residents who live on the trail’s borders on how they can help by planting and pulling on their own property
