Friends of Montclair RR Trail is a community-based group of trail users, neighbors
and supporters who value the historic trail and wish to create a lasting natural legacy for future generations to enjoy. Our Website provides a variety of information for members and the community. The Montclair Railroad Trail is a City of Oakland Linear ParkThe Montclair Railroad Trail has an interesting"rails to trail" history. It was built on the rail bed of the Sacramento Northern Railway. From 1912 to 1957 passenger and freight trains ran between Oakland
and Chico. Read more... In the 1970’s community action stopped the construction of a proposed highway, which would have replaced the rail bed with a multi-lane freeway. This was one of the first uses of the Environmental Impact Report law in the U.S. Read more... Today, this repurposed railroad right-of-way provides a beautiful natural setting for walking, jogging, hiking and bicycling. The paved, flat trail is 1.5 miles long. Montclair Railroad Trail Access Locations 1. Montclair Village behind the Montclair Parking Garage The garage is located between La Salle Ave and Medau Place, 6235 LaSalle Ave, Oakland, CA 94611. Behind the garage, there is a short walkway that accesses the trail. The LaSalle Ave access consists of 4 stairs and a paved ramp up to the trail. The Medau Pl. access (behind McCaulou's parking lot has a gentler ramp and no stairs. The trail ends in the residential area of Shepherd Canyon at Saroni Drive. This point is actually where the train went underground into a tunnel. See map... 2. Paso Robles Dr. at Bishops Court (off Shepherd Canyon Rd). See map... 3. City of Oakland Corporation Yard, across from the Fire Station on Shepherd Canyon Road.
